Summerset State Park
Once a coal mining operation in the 1930s, Banner Lakes at Summerset State Park is now the place for pure outdoor adventure! Find some of the state’s best trout fishing and mountain biking here!
Bike or Hike
Kick up some dirt on six different mountain bike trails designed for three different levels of ability and experience. Some of the best trails in the state! Expect tight singletrack through the tailings of the old mine — challenging climbs and rapid descents! And the trail names are the best, like Coal Miner’s Daughter, Corner Pocket and Extra Credit.
For a smoother ride, there’s a two-mile trail loop that connects to the paved 11-mile Summerset Trail, running from Indianola to Carlisle. This trail was once a rail line, winding up and down through beautiful woodlands and wetlands. Biking enthusiasts can also connect to the 19-mile Great Western Trail, named for the Chicago Great Western Company whose trains operated on this line from 1892 to 1968.
The two-mile loop and Summerset Trail are perfect for hikers too, and there are plenty of additional trails offering fresh air, sunshine and an up-close view of the area’s abundant nature and wildlife. Don’t worry, the park is just as beautiful during the fall and winter months!
Fish
The fish stories are all true at Banner Lakes! Find a spot on the shore or one of the fishing docks, or you can fish from your boat on either the north or south lake. South lake is freshly stocked with trout during cooler months. You can reel in a 10-lb. trout! There’s plenty of bluegill, catfish, largemouth bass and crappie too.
Take Aim
Put your shooting skills to the test at the nearby Banner Shooting Range, managed by the DNR. The range was recently renovated and offers a rifle/handgun range with sheltered shooting benches. The range is great for archery as well. And there’s also a trap shooting area.
Kayak
You’ll find kayak rentals nearby, so don’t miss the opportunity to get out on the water. Aside from the two sizable Banner Lakes, there’s a collection of small, quaint ponds scattered throughout the park. More than a dozen bodies of water add to the incredible scenery of the area!
